Victorian Lava jewelry, quite popular in its time with tourists. The lady on the cameo is so expressive. A fantastic pin or brooch with a pinchbeck gold setting. Fine jewelry.
A highly detailed engraved dimensional lava cameo brooch of a beautiful lady - presumably from Greek Mythology judging by her head dress and off the shoulder pleated robe. The piece is secured by the original open c clasp. No sign of any safety chain ever being present, perhaps because it is a secure clasp with the pin sitting over the top curl of the C.
Condition: In good vintage condition - it needs a gentle clean. The pinchbeck gold setting shows a little patina to the sides (which are not prominent) and some to the back. It looks like there once was a bail attached.
The fashion movement for lava cameo jewelry started in the early Victorian era, women visiting Italy usually in Pompeii and surrounding areas would acquire a piece of Lava Cameo jewelry as a keepsake of their visit.
Dimensions: Approx 1 1/4" diameter
Providence: Bought during our visit to Berlin from an antique shop.
